Mr. Cub

I’m a Cubs fan. I’m also the parent of a 4 year old.

Some would see these as completely unrelated facts. One fellow Cubs fan went so far as to tell me I should raise him a Yankees fan. (Side bar: That’s not going to happen. As I tucked him into bed last night with a Cubs blanket, he mentioned to me that he hates the Yankees. That’s my boy.)

However, I’m at a bit of a quandry. Four year olds sometimes have a hard time getting beyond the one favorite player position. Last year, that was Sammy. This year, obviously, it’s not. Though Theo keeps asking me what happened, and I’ve had to tell him The Story Of Sammy And How Eventually He Got Traded at least a half dozen times. [Abridged version. No mention of how Dusty is a terrible manager, for example.] Anyway, here’s my dilemna. It needs to be a position player; someone who he will see play pretty much any time we go to a game. Although, he does know Prior and Wood by now. I had been trying out “Go Nomar!” with him, but obviously that’s scrapped. Jerry Hairston Jr. is a bit of a mouthful. I’m not quite ready to embrace DuBois.

So tonight, in the 8th inning, as I watched the game in the bedroom and we roughhoused on the bed, I paused for a second and said, “hey Theo, GO NEIFI!”

He said “Go Neifi!”

Neifi hit the next pitch into the right field bleachers.

Congratulations Mr. Perez, you’re the new Mr. Cub.

Internet Commentary of the Damned

You’ve all read them. Clicking mindlessly from movie to movie on amazon, browsing through ePinions, or god forbid reading Slashdot comments, when all the sudden you come face to face with some idiot whose commentary clearly requires them to be damned for eternity.

Well, even if that doesn’t happen to you all the time, it drives me up the wall. So, without further review, our inaugural Internet Commentary Of The Damned!

I liked it but it was no Rocky. It would’ve been better if they had an old crusty manager, played by Burgess Meredith, shout things like: “He’ll know ya to tomorra, Rock!” or “He’ll murdalize ya, Rock!” throughout the film. I would’ve liked it better then.

Most Wide Open Basketball Playoffs EVAR?

Chris Sheridan of the AP seems to think so:

[T]he 2005 playoffs will unfold with several of the NBA’s superstars sitting on the sidelines wondering how they missed out on one of the most wide-open chances for a championship in decades.

Yes, decades. Because for the first time since the late 1970s, there is no clear-cut gigantic obstacle needing to be overcome.

Recent playoffs always began with challengers knowing they might face the daunting prospect of facing O’Neal and Bryant… in the years prior to that had to go against Jordan, Larry Bird, or Magic Johnson…

Uh… Remember 93-94? No Jordan? Wide open, Hakeem won his first of two back to back rings, any of this ringing a bell?

On the basis of the fact that no other team has won a championship since 1982, I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that one of the Bulls, Celtics, Lakers, Pistons, Rockets or Spurs will win.

Rain Rain, Stay Today, But Go Away Tomorrow

I have upper deck tickets for the cubs game tomorrow… but if the game today is rained out, Mark Prior should make his first start of the season tomorrow, and I’ll be there. Cool.

Certain naysayers think this means I’ll be sure to see a loss, but that’s ok, I’m a Cubs fan.

Update: Today’s game rained out. Doubleheader at noon tomorrow. I win.
