I take back what I said

I take back what I said here.

I never realized how awesome mod_python.publisher really was. It only takes a few lines to integrate it with clearsilver, too.

Running windows sucks

but at least you can find out who has installed nasty software that’s spying on you behind your back, popping up ads, and doing god knows what else…

Gregg Easterbrook

One of the things I got from my grade school education (and I’ll probably write something more detailed on that at some point) is an appreciation for the fact that often, when two people arrive at the same conclusion from completely opposite viewpoints, there’s probably a deeper truth at work that may be beyond either one of those understandings, but they’re probably on the right track.

I got that feeling when I read this recent entry from Gregg Easterbrook’s blog today. The idea of forming a moral opinion on something based on scripture is, basically foreign to me, but when I back when I did read the bible, the overwhelming concept driving the teachings of Christ always seemed to me to be completely antithetical to the kind of stupidity and hate mongering so frequently done In His Name.

His football column is also good.

off to california

I’m travelling to San Jose for the next 5 days. To reach me there, either send an IM or email.

veterans day

Veterans day to me has always been kind of a humorous event. It’s my mom’s birthday, and she’s a government employee, so she always gets “her birthday off”, but other than that it hasn’t impacted me that much.

After reading these letters, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to think of it that way again. It’s probably the first time I’ve cried reading something on the web since the weeks after 9/11.

ah, java

Burning hot liquid
bitter taste
the quicker to
my liver waste

I’ve let you sit
you’ve gotten cold
3 more weeks and
you’ll have mold

but if I drink
you straightaway
I can clean my mug
for another day

Dynamic Content

I hereby vow not to use mod_perl or mod_python for anything, unless someone can convince me that apache2 is stable when doing threaded only serving on unix. I am tired of waiting for Yet Another VM to compile my source every time I click a link.

Pia-no-mo

As most of you know, pianosa is going away soon. Why?

Well, basically, I don’t have the time anymore. The box has been sucking up space on Andrew Ho’s DSL for the last year, and really, is that necessary?

No.

Most of the people who co-admin pianosa with me have already gone in on a colocated box (ratchet, which you can maybe join for a small fee), and I really haven’t had the time to keep the box secure or operate services reliably since theo was born. And honestly, the box has served it’s purpose. It was a good playground for me to learn how to run services, but I’m long past needing that. Hell, I’m not even a systems administrator anymore.

The community that has built up around pianosa isn’t just being cut adrift. The IRC and news servers will remain active, and I’ll still do some DNS hosting. For the rest of it — I’ve been a crutch for many people who have not wanted to make the time or effort to support their own presence. And while there’s no reason that everybody should be self-sufficient, I no longer have the energy to be that crutch. That which must be centralized — fine. The rest, you’re own your own.

It has been a lot of fun, and I’m not completely vanishing into the woodwork. But my wife and son deserve more of my time, and by god they shall have it!

which feed to use?

use index.rdf. for whatever reason index.xml no longer has full text, and who the hell wants that?

By the way, I’ve enabled comments. *shrug*.

And so it begins

I’ll probably post a few more garbage entries over the next day or two while I shake out the system. In the meantime, read Sy Hersch’s excellent article in the New Yorker on how fucked up our president’s relationship with the CIA has grown
