The Awful Truth About Blogging

tbogg:

A word to the wise: no one is going to get a blogging Pulitzer for being the fastest to post what they just saw and heard on the TV.

Now you know why I haven’t been blogging lately…

In other news, the nutjob in charge of being nuked by the US Iran has his own blog. Truly, the shark jumping has reached epic proportions.

Changing Habits

Well, I’ve been at my new job for a week and it’s ok so far. One of the major changes it’s brought about in my life is that I have to be there between 7:30 and 8am. If you’ve spent a lot of time around me, you know how … surprising that may sound. It turns out it’s really not that bad, though the transition was a little rough.

Between that and turning 30, I’ve been trying to get into some better habits. One of them is keeping my inbox small. I’ve developed a bad habit over the last 10 years of just reading my inbox and letting messages pile up — just a couple of weeks ago it was 2600 messages and in the past it’s easily reached 5000 or more. So, took a two pronged approach.

Phase one was the nuke it from orbit. I moved every single message older than 7 days out of my inbox and into a folder called dmz. This approach is one I got from the 43 Folders: Inbox Zero series.

Phase two was the addition of a new mutt alias. I bound it to (shift-A), but that’s just something I had available.

The alias is this:

macro index "A" "<limit>~r >7d\n<tag-pattern>~r >7d\n"

Basically, it limits the view to only show messages older than 7 days and tags them all as well. In my inbox, I then process the old messages one at a time (make sure I’ve replied, archive, or delete). In a mailing list folder, I simply delete them all (;d). Public list archives exist so I don’t have to waste processor power or disk space on stuff I will never ever read.

So far, so good. We’ll see how well it lasts.

webpy and authentication

I’ve been using the development (0.2 version) of web.py to develop my own web gallery. So far it’s pretty awesome. I miss inheritance from Cheetah’s templates but otherwise everything has worked really well.

One thing that doesn’t really exist is support for authentication or sessions. Fortunately, sessions are pretty easy to add using flup, which is pretty much a requirement of using web.py.

So, with that in mind, here’s what I’m using for authentication:

Corporate Governance

… finally has a rebuttal for the Bush Administration:

Home Depot’s Board Dodges Shareholders:

All but one of Home Depot’s 11-member board of directors was a no-show at the company’s annual meeting Thursday, where several proposals questioned the huge executive compensation paid to CEO Robert Nardelli.

Nardelli was the only board member present at the meeting, which ended quickly because he didn’t give the customary speech and took no questions from the audience.

Derrek Lee hurt… ARGH!

DLee is going to be in a cast for 8 weeks with two fractures in his wrist (distal radial and distal ulna).

That BLOWS.

I really hope this doesn’t turn into a bad excuse to let Neifi play every day. Here’s the lineup I’d like to see everyday until DLee comes back.

  1. Juan Pierre, CF
  2. Jerry Hairston, Jr, 2B
  3. Todd Walker 1B
  4. Aramis Ramirez, 3B
  5. Michael Barrett, C
  6. Jacque Jones, RF
  7. Matt Murton, LF
  8. Ronny CedeƱo, SS
  9. pitcher

My deepest fear is that Neifi Perez ends up seeing 350 ABs this season because of this.
